In my opinion, the introduction of the internet has changed our culture in a multitude of different ways. The internet has allowed us to easily create, share and consume art and goods. While also providing more avenues to sell our creations and purchase others. On top of that, the internet has made it easier to be more socially and politically informed. Giving us access to information that lets us help not only our communities but the world at large.

The internet has had a definite impact on how we create. It has made art and culture more accessible, enabling a neverending wealth of new creations (Dentzel). This wealth also inspires the creation of different forms of expression (Dentzel). With numerous different platforms to share art Tumblr, DeviantArt, Instagram, and TikTok we have nearly constant access to new things. Furthermore, the availability of commerce platforms enables us to sell our art and handmade creations ourselves (Galarneu). Platforms like Etsy have enabled the creation of many small businesses and made it easy to sell their goods (Galarneau). Allowing for the effortless ability to purchase art and handmade goods.

The internet has also had a real impact on how we stay informed. The internet has proven to be a key tool in providing information about upcoming political elections and numerous social issues (Dentzel). It is now possible to bring more awareness to these issues over vast distances as well as made it easier to support them. Not only that but the internet also allows us insight into the issues plaguing heavily censored places (Galarneau). Permitting us to address social issues on a global scale.

In conclusion, it is my opinion that the internet has changed our culture in numerous ways. It gives us the ability to consume and create as well as the ability to sell and purchase. It also grants us the power to remain informed when it comes to elections and social issues. There is no doubt the internet has shaped our culture in many ways and I think it will continue to do so.

  1. Hi Siobhan, great post! I really enjoyed how you brought up how the internet has impacted the way we create. It made me think about the current discourse going around about the rise of AI art. From apps where you can be turned into anything you want, to people making children’s books completely from an AI. Unfortunately, there are some negative effects of AI art. From the article “The Dark Side of Artificial Intelligence Art and its Impacts” they state, how AI art can be used to infringe on copyrights, create fake art, and can even be used for political propaganda (2022). I think the biggest concern when it comes to AI art is the fact that it can use other people’s art to create its own image, and there’s nothing the artist can really do about it. I’m interested to see how this will impact artists as time goes on.
